WHAT IS INDEPENDENT STUDY?

Independent Study is a method of delivering educational information via booklets or online instead of a physical classroom.  Courses are evaluated by qualified HCDSB secondary school teachers.  The credits you earn are the same as those earned at any secondary school in Ontario.  Every Independent Learning Course meets the requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Education and counts toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Independent Study courses are primarily designed for adult learners that are unable to attend regular day classes, however, secondary school students can register in some circumstances with permission from the Principal of Thomas Merton.

Your success with independent study depends on your own motivation and persistence.  You will have to rely on your own work habits and eagerness to learn.  It is self-guided learning which gives you the flexibility to complete a course at your own pace but it also requires you to be disciplined to complete the course.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT INDEPENDENT STUDY?

  • Students are only permitted to register for one course at a time.
  • Registrations occur from September until mid-March (you don't have to wait for a new semester to start!)
  • You do not have access to a teacher during the course.
  • You must earn 50% on the final exam or culminating in order to receive the credit.
  • Students must complete the course within the school year with all materials completed and submitted by the end of May regardless of when the course started.
  • Any student under 18 does need permission from the Principal of Thomas Merton to register (this can discussed at the time of registration.
